My Journey as a Beginner Runner: Lessons Learned and Tips for Success (eng)

In April 2023, I embarked on a new journey: I started running. My first attempt was challenging, to say the least—I could barely manage 3 kilometers. It quickly became evident that I lacked the proper technique and understanding of running, which contributed to my fatigue and struggles.

To improve, I began reading about running. I discovered that several factors could influence a runner's experience, particularly for beginners. One of the most crucial elements I learned about was pace. Running at the right pace can significantly affect endurance and reduce fatigue. It was enlightening to realize that maintaining a steady, manageable pace was key to enjoying the run and minimizing exhaustion.

Another critical factor for beginner runners is the choice of shoes. Proper footwear is essential because, as a novice, your muscles are not yet strong enough to handle the stress of running. Wearing the wrong shoes can lead to inflammation and injuries. I learned that it's always advisable to buy running shoes that are slightly bigger than your feet. This extra space helps accommodate any swelling that might occur during a run, ensuring comfort and reducing the risk of blisters and other foot problems.

I also found that running with a group can be incredibly motivating. Joining a running group helped me stay committed and provided the encouragement I needed to keep going, even when it felt tough. However, it's important not to try to match the pace of more experienced runners. They have developed their strength and stamina over time, and trying to keep up with them can lead to unnecessary strain and potential injury. Instead, I learned to listen to my body. Fatigue or shortness of breath during a run often signals that something is wrong, whether it's an issue with pace, technique, or simply needing a break.

Setting goals is another strategy that has helped me tremendously. I set a target to be able to run 5 kilometers without walking or stopping after a month of regular training, running three times a week. Having a clear, achievable goal kept me focused and motivated.

Starting as a runner has been a transformative experience. While the initial stages were tough, understanding the importance of pace, proper footwear, group support, and listening to my body has made the journey enjoyable and rewarding. If you're considering taking up running, remember these tips and set your goals—you'll be amazed at what you can achieve with dedication and the right approach.
